Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre was founded in May 2006, to meet the needs of talented dancers that were available to dance, choreographers that were ready to create new works, and San Antonio audiences that were hungry for a fresh approach and a new experience with ballet.
In our first season, we produced two concerts (Dec. '06 and May '07). Reflecting our desire to collaborate with other artists, we were accompanied by violinist, Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio and pianist Kristin Roach in Stravinsky's "Suite Italienne," and by rock guitarist Jon Schmidt and drummer David Haddad in "A Little Bit of Zeppelin." We featured New York City Ballet ballerina Michele Gifford in Balanchine's "Rubies pas de deux from Jewels," by special arrangement with the Balanchine Trust.
Our concerts also provided free matinees for school children. We appeared in many benefit events around the city and did our first lecture demonstration at Briscoe Academy. We received a grant from the Kronkosky Foundation towards the next season.
The 2007-'08 season included two concerts (Dec. '07 and May '08) with collaborations with Bett Butler, jazz pianist, vocalist, and composer; Flamenco Dancers from San Antonio Dance Academy; San Antonio Jazz Ensemble; Los Espagnoles Flamenco Dance Company; and Ciro, flamenco guitarist. As always our concerts were attended by over 1000 school children at the free matinees. An appearance at the Luminaria Arts Night in San Antonio, a lecture demonstration at Northwoods Elementary, and a grant from the San Antonio Area Foundation towards the '08-'09 season finished the year.
Fall 2008, AABT
performed at the Carver
with new choreography to
Military Marches, Big
Band, as well as
classical offerings were
combined with guest
artists Michele Gifford
and Andrey Prikhodka.
Michele received rave
reviews for her
performance of Elizabeth
Gillespy's "Lorelei." In
addition to the
activities and
performances listed on
the home page for Spring
2009, we did another
lecture demonstration at
Briscoe Academy and
appeared in San
Antonio's Lumenaria Arts
Night. -
